Bruichladdich 13y/o Petrus Hogshead #3684 Cat Label Svenska Eldvatten 59.6%ABV
Petrus casks are very expensive and they don't sell many casks, in fact I've only ever had named Petrus casks from Bruichladdich or independent bottlings of Macallan, Bowmore and Laphroaig from Murray McDavid acquired while Mark Reynier owned that bottler. So I imagine its only people with serious connections with the wine trade that get these casks Octomore 2.2 'Orpheus' is the most famous whisky matured in a Petrus cask.
This Bruichladdich is from the leading Swedish independent bottler Svenska Eldvatten and is from their cult 'Cat label' series that sell out pretty fast and are often flipped by collectors - they are pretty pricey as a result. This one was aged in a Petrus Hogshead #3684 and then given a finish in a Sherry cask - only 100 bottles. There have been a couple of these Petrus casks from Bruichladdich that have slight sulphury notes and these are super popular and highly rated in Germany but are highly divisive as some people hate sulphury notes. On tasting there is a lot of cask influence from both wine and sherry and quite a chewy juicy mouthfeel. There is an umami note on the palate like beef stock powder then lots of sherry, dark chocolate and prunes, then long mouth watering fine Bordeaux wine finish that goes on for ages. I suspect this cask was just too much wine cask influence and some astringency then they put it in a great sherry cask to try and rebalance it and its made kind of a fun battle on the palate and it changes a lot in the glass too its like two whiskies in one - both pretty tasty. Recommend 30ml as I had 10ml and then the next 10ml tasted quite different so its a really interesting whisky to spend some time with as it opens up in the glass.
