The return of a classic. The original was a great whisky but was a little underpowered at 40%ABV - many of the casks in the vat were much older than 17 years - Ardbeg was mostly closed from 1981 to 1997 just a few runs occasionally to keep the stills functioning - so the 17year old was rumoured to contain much older stock that had fallen below 40% - so despite the low abv there was a lot of character in the whisky. This new 17y/o is just a marketing ploy to play on fans nostalgia for the period soon after Glenmorangie purchased and reopened the distillery in 1997. I'm disappointed that they didn't make the ABV at least 46% as there is little really old Ardbeg stock left to add age and body to the 17y/o vatting so raising the ABV would add body. Try a sample before buying a bottle - don't encourage the marketing gimmickry - LVMH the current owner of Ardbeg needs to be pressured into making great whisky and not just building 'lifestyle brands'.
