Carpathian Whisky is the only single malt whisky distillery in Romania. There is a Scotch/Irish connection as Allan Anderson has been the project manager and master distiller at Carpathian Whisky for 8 years. He worked his way up over 18 years from an entry level role to Distillery manager at Loch Lomond Distillery and immediately before setting up Carpathain he project managed the conversion of Diageo's Harp Great Northern Brewery into the Great Northern Distillery to create the largest Irish owned Distillery.

Carpathian Whisky ticks a lot of boxes - local barley from Romania, crystal clear spring water from the Carpathian Mountains, non-chill filtered, natural colour, great climate for maturation, access to some amazing casks due to ownership of best vineyards and spirits producers in the Balkans. There has been a clear jump in review score since the 2022 releases and the latest ones in 2024 so it will be interesting to follow this whisky to see if it keeps the positive trajectory and improves further as the maturation time increases.

"Carpathian Single Malt Feteasca Neagra Cask Finish is a fascinating expression from Romanian distillery Alexandrion Saber 1789 which was crafted from Romanian barley and sub-Carpathian mountain water and then finished in casks that previously housed wine from the Romanian grape variety, Feteasca Neagra (Black Maiden), from Alexandrion's own wine cellar. It was aged initially in American oak bourbon barrels and bottled at 46% ABV. Previously the wine casks held 2021 Hyperion Fetească Neagră 2016, which was awarded the Double Gold medal in the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles and is probably the most award-winning Romanian wine.
