Yushan Signature Sherry Cask Single Malt Taiwanese Whisky 46%ABV 30ml
Yushan Signature Sherry Cask Single Malt Taiwanese Whisky 46%ABV 30ml
Yushan or Jade Mountain is the highest mountain in Taiwan and is the new brand name for export whisky from Nantou Distillery and a rebrand of the Omar Whisky brand for some markets. Brand experts have advised that Omar Whisky doesn't create the right brand image and people mistakenly thought it was made in the Middle East and wasn't single malt whisky. Ironically. Omar is actually a Gaelic word meaning 'amber' and was selected because the distillers at Nantou follow the Scottish whisky making tradition and use Scottish made equipment (including 4 copper stills made by Forsyths of Rothes in Speyside) and send their staff to Edinburgh to study Brewing and Distilling.
Yushan Sherry Cask Single Malt is not chill-filtered or coloured, has a clean yet complex nose with notes of stewed fruit, dried fruit, and dark chocolate
Nantou Distillery is owned by TTL - the state owned tobacco and alcohol company. Taiwan was a Japanese colony for 50 years until 1945 and TTL was set up by the Japanese colonial government in 1913 with some input from German brewing and distillation experts. In 1949 TTL was taken over by the Chinese Nationalist Government that had fled the mainland after Mao Zedong had taken power there. For nearly all of the 20th Century the only alcohol and tobacco products available in Taiwan were TTL products. In 2002 Taiwan joined the World Trade Organisation and a condition of accession was to dismantle the government monopoly on alcohol and tobacco. Immediately French Wine and Scotch Whisky became massively popular. Also soon after, Kavalan Distillery was built, the first private whisky distillery in Taiwan.
