Lowland single malt from Ailsa Bay - a new distillery built on the site of the old Ladyburn/ Ayrshire Single Malt Distillery which is more or less part of the Girvan Distillery Complex. This complex of distilleries is massive and makes blended whiskies such as Grants and Monkey Shoulder as well as Drambuie liqueur and Hendricks Gin. The distillery complex looks across Ailsa Bay to Ailsa Craig a monolithic granite island which has unique stone that was originally the only stone that could be used to make curling stones for the sport of curling, The cap of this first release has a piece of Ailsa Craig granite inlaid in the top. Later releases don't have stone on the cap.
This is the first release as Ailsa Bay released in 2016. This was the most scientifically advanced distillery in Scotland when it opened in 2007. producing whisky that uses 'micromaturation' so it has exact peat and sweetness levels. The first release was 22 PPM Peat and 11 SPPM sweetness. This is discontinued and the newer releases since 2018 are called 'sweet smoke' and have raised the sweetness to 19 SPPM.
