Whisky in Isolation made the first mulberry wood cask finished Australian whisky. This one is finished in the same cask for a longer period. Midleton's brand Method and Madness made the first Irish whiskey matured in Mulberry casks and this is also available as a sample.

Mulberry trees have been revered in Roman and Japanese culture. East European liquors Palinka and Rakia are often matured in Mulberry wood casks as they are believed to offer health benefits that counter the damage of the alcohol. Its not an old wives tale - Mulberry wood and root extract are now being evaluated to lower blood pressure and increase insulin sensitivity - also as a weight loss supplement. Don't rush out and chew on mulberry wood and leaves as the sap is toxic and causes hallucinations and serious gastrointestinal problems - casks have to be seasoned for a long time to be used in liquor production.

Whisky Soliloquist
Watermelon Sugar, Low.

A perfumed Turkish delight on the nose; it gives complexity which is very welcome. Spice and grain on the palate does bury the dark fruits that battle to get out. A touch of watermelon too, which is fascinating and would be great if it was stronger. There are other Australian drams I would recommend at this price point, the SMWS Apera for Everyone for one. Through entirely my own fault, I have not really tried enough of the Whisky In Isolation offerings or bottles from Kinglake Distillery to be able to offer an alternative from them. I don’t think this is the worst first impression, but I’m sure there are better ones out there.
